Choosing the Right Lawyer For You
November 14, 2008
1. Look for lawyers that have experience with your issue.
If you have a custody issue you want to deal with, then a criminal lawyer may not be the best bet while a family lawyer will be much better suited to your needs.
2. Know your budget when it comes to choosing the right lawyer.
You want to make sure that you can afford the time your lawyer will spend on the case. You want a good lawyer, but you don’t want to go bankrupt when working with one.
3. Check out their references and online reviews.
Don’t forget to ask friends and family members for referrals and to look in online forums to view reviews or comments about local lawyers. This is a great way to find out what a lawyer’s reputation is like. Additionally, these comments will be quite honest, as the people get little out of recommending a lawyer with whom they have experience.
4. Be sure to meet with prospective lawyers.
You want to ask them as many different questions as possible. Do not think that any question is too dumb or basic to ask. You want a lawyer who will break down the legal process and explain it in a way you understand. You want a lawyer with whom you can share some personal information. You should feel as if a lawyer is interested in what you have to say and is honest with you. If you feel uncomfortable with someone, continue your search until you find someone whom you do feel comfortable with.
